Where Glamour Meets the Mediterranean: Inside the Marbella Club

For over 70 years, Marbella Club – a legendary hotel on the Costa del Sol, has been a celebrated luxury destination attracting the world’s elite. Founded by Prince Alfonso von Hohenlohe in 1954, this iconic hotel began as a beach club and has grown into one of Europe’s most prestigious retreats. In March 2024, I had the honour of experiencing its legendary elegance, invited by Leading Hotels of the World, to celebrate International Women’s Day.

Despite Marbella’s 330 days of sunshine annually, I arrived during one of its rare rainy spells. Yet, even the weather couldn’t dampen the charm of this enchanting property.

What makes Marbella Club a legendary hotel like no other?

The Marbella Club Hotel is not just a place to stay, but an experience in itself. Nestled along the iconic Golden Mile of Marbella, the hotel’s legendary service begins the moment you arrive. With 121 stylish rooms and suites, complemented by 14 exclusive villas, each with private gardens and pools, every accommodation is designed with the utmost attention to detail and comfort.

But what truly sets the Marbella Club apart is the exceptional service. With around 700 employees dedicated to just 135 rooms, suites, and villas, the staff-to-guest ratio is unparalleled. This means that every guest can expect not only impeccable attention to detail but also a level of personalized service that feels as though it was tailored just for them.

Imagine arriving to your room to find your favorite flowers arranged in a delicate vase, or having your preferred music softly playing in the background. Whether it’s having a warm towel ready for you after a swim in the Mediterranean, or a perfectly arranged breakfast waiting for you on your private terrace, the staff at Marbella Club anticipates your every need before you even realize it. It’s the kind of luxury where no request is too small, and no detail is overlooked.

Whether you’re looking for a beachfront escape or a spa retreat, the exclusivity of the Marbella Club Hotel offers it all, ensuring an experience that is not just about relaxation, but about immersion in unparalleled luxury and care.

Arriving in Style: A warm welcome to the iconic Marbella Club Hotel

The journey along Marbella’s famous Golden Mile set the tone for the unforgettable experience ahead. The drive, lined with palm trees and vibrant scenery, hinted at the luxury awaiting within.

Upon arrival at the Marbella Club, I was immediately struck by the lobby, a stunning space that exudes the elegance of a grand Andalusian home. High ceilings, hand-painted tiles, and antique furnishings seamlessly blend history with a timeless freshness. At check-in, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that I had been upgraded to the Marbella Club Suite, a thoughtful gesture that heightened my excitement.

From there, a charming hotel buggy—delightfully whimsical and uniquely personal—whisked me away to my suite, enhancing the feeling of entering a private, secluded retreat. The suite itself was everything I had imagined and more: spacious, light-filled, and decorated in a harmonious blend of contemporary luxury and Andalusian charm. Large French doors opened onto a private terrace, offering stunning views of the hotel’s lush gardens which looked even more enchanting despite the rain.

Elegance in every detail: The art of the perfect suite

Inside the suite, a chilled bottle of champagne and a beautifully arranged cheese platter awaited—just a few of the thoughtful touches that showcased the Marbella Club’s commitment to luxury service. After a long journey, the sight of the marble bathtub was irresistible, and I indulged in a relaxing soak, sipping champagne while reflecting on the hotel’s storied past.

The Marbella Club Hotel has attracted royalty, Hollywood stars, and world leaders throughout its history, yet its relaxed atmosphere ensures that every guest feels like royalty. The experience is one of privacy, comfort, and impeccable service.

Indulging in the legendary opulence at Marbella Club Hotel

That evening, I had the pleasure of exploring the property with my travel group, visiting some of the hotel’s stunning villas. The highlight of the evening was a private Andalusian night in one of the villas, complete with a roaring fire, local delicacies, and a flamenco performance—a memorable celebration of the Andalusian culture Marbella Club embodies.

An Andalusian paradise: The timeless appeal of Marbella Club Hotel

The next morning, after a leisurely breakfast with my fellow travelers, I set out to explore more of Marbella Club’s sprawling grounds. The hotel’s unique design, featuring whitewashed cottages, villas, and bungalows nestled among lush gardens, evokes the feel of a peaceful village. The architecture showcases Andalusian roots, with Moorish-inspired tiles and terracotta roofs adding to the charm.

Later, we ventured to Anantara Villa Padierna, another luxury property in the Leading Hotels of the World collection. After tasting local olive oils and savoring a chef-prepared lunch, we indulged in a soothing spa treatment that further elevated our luxury and wellness experience.

Dinner at Cipriani & Nightcap at Rudi’s: Culinary delights and iconic Glamour in Marbella

For dinner, we dined at Cipriani Marbella, located at the nearby Puente Romano Beach Resort, a sister property of the Marbella Club and another member of Leading Hotels of the World. The Cipriani Marbella restaurant offers the same world-class service and Venetian-inspired cuisine that has made the Cipriani brand famous worldwide.

Following dinner, we made our way to Rudi’s Bar, named in tribute to the late Rudi Schoenborn, the hotel’s former general manager. The elegant décor—dark wood paneling, vintage photographs, and plush leather seating—sets the stage for a relaxed yet sophisticated atmosphere. As I sipped a perfectly crafted French 75, I felt connected to the countless luminaries who had visited Rudi’s Bar over the years.

Relaxation redefined: Wellness and tranquility at the Marbella Club

On my final morning, the sun finally emerged, and I made my way to the renowned Thalasso Spa. This tranquil retreat draws on the healing properties of the Mediterranean Sea, offering rejuvenating treatments to restore body and mind. In addition to the spa, the Marbella Club offers a variety of outdoor activities, including yoga, Pilates, and water sports on the private beach, as well as a golf course designed by Dave Thomas.

After a leisurely morning, I strolled along the peaceful Marbella Club beach, taking in the serene surroundings as the gentle waves lapped the shore.

A farewell to remember: Cherishing the legacy of Marbella Club

Before my departure, I took a quick trip to Marbella’s Old Town, with its historic charm and narrow streets—an exciting contrast to the hotel’s luxurious serenity. Marbella Club’s prime location allows guests to easily explore both the town’s vibrant atmosphere and the peaceful luxury of the hotel.

My final stop was the Chanel boutique at Marbella Club, one of only three in Spain. The exclusive collection of couture pieces and accessories offered a perfect keepsake from my unforgettable stay.

As I packed my bags, I took one last look at the sprawling gardens, whitewashed villas, and the Mediterranean beyond. The Marbella Club is more than just a hotel—it’s an experience that fuses history, modern luxury, and unparalleled service. This will not be my last visit to this Mediterranean haven, where the past, present, and future converge to create timeless, unforgettable memories.
